Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is the passing of loose or liquid stools frequently. Acute diarrhoea can come on suddenly and only lasts a short time. Chronic diarrhoea occurs over a longer period of time. Stomach pains, nausea, wind, vomiting and a headache often accompany diarrhoea. It often occurs when travelling abroad.
Causes
Common causes of Diarrhoea include food poisoning, gastro-enteritis, anxiety, excess alcohol, spicy foods, and side effects of certain prescription drugs. Good personal and food hygiene, appropriate storage and cooking of foods, and avoiding certain foods when travelling will reduce the risk of food poisoning.
Prevention
Cook and store food corectly. Eat a healthy and varied diet, only drinking alcohol in moderation. Keeping stress under control will help prevent diarrhoea.
Treatment
Drink plenty of liquid. Water, clear soups, and sugary drinks are ideal to replace lost water, salt, and sugar.
Eat foods as usual unless this makes matters worse. Bland foods such as bread, rice, and potatoes may be better tolerated.
Anti-diarrhoea medication is available from the pharmacist.
