BHS Validated Blood Pressure Monitors

Perhaps one of the most distinguishing features about any blood pressure monitor is whether or not it is BHS validated. By this we don't mean validated by the famous high street store, but by the British Hypertension Society.

Elemano
The Elemano® blood pressure monitor is especially developed for professionals in the health care sector. High accuracy is the foremost mentioned concern of health care workers related to blood pressure monitors. Correct diagnose and treatment of patients is based on the results of these measurements. The level of accuracy a blood pressure monitor can offer directly infl uences the safety and well-being of the patient. Terumo® therefore developed the Elemano®, a semi automatic blood pressure monitor using the oscillo metric method. Thanks to the new and advanced technology of the “Terumo® Double Cuff Method” a very high level of accuracy is ensured.

Professional accuracy
The Elemano® is a digital blood pressure monitor using the oscillometric method for detecting the blood pressure. Unlike other blood pressure monitors the Elemano® is equipped with the advanced concept of the double cuff. This method is using a large compression cuff dedicated to ischemia and a small cuff, placed in the centre of the compression cuff, to detect the oscillation of
the arterial pulsation. A buffer sheet is inserted between the large and the small cuff in order to prevent transmission of pulsatile oscillations.

The compression pressure is highest in the central cuff region and decreases gradually towards both ends until it reaches almost zero. Consequently raising the cuff pressure above the SBP occludes the artery completely under the central cuff region but incomplete under the upstream side. Therefore when using only a large cuff, oscillations generated by the arterial pulsation under the upstream side contaminate the oscillation of the central cuff region by producing a constant oscillation within the large cuff.

Waveforms detected by the small cuff of the Elemano® is characterized by very clear detection points for the systolic blood pressure (SBP; Ps) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP; Pd) (Figure b), compared to waveforms detected by a large cuff in the conventional oscillometric method (Figure c). Therefore algorithms used in the Elemano® for the determination of the SBP and DBP were rendered more objective. A more accurate determination of the SBP and the DBP in comparison to the conventional method is guarantied(1).

Flexibility
Depending on the patient’s condition the Elemano® offers three different measurement modes:

• Normal (automatic) Effective for your routine BP measurement
• Slow (automatic) Slower exhaustion of the cuff after pressurization Especially suitable for patients with “Faint pulse” and ”Hypotension”
• Auscultation (manual) For blood pressure measurement with a stethoscope
(conventional method)

This fl exibility enables the use of the Elemano® both by doctors and nurses
showing a preference for the oscillometric method and by those favoring the
standard auscultatory method. Digital blood pressure monitor Elemano®
