Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for home use

The importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is often associated more closely with workplaces and the legislation that comes with it.

Contrary to this, PPE has its uses throughout our daily lives, both at home and while on the move. A broad variety of items is found beneath this umbrella term. But which are the most valuable and when are we likely to need them?

The current Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak has sparked an upsurge in demand for PPE. Items such as hand sanitizer, disposable gloves, and face masks are complimenting home first aid kits across the globe.

Here’s a closer look at these items together with others that can provide personal protection, particularly against the spread of infection.

Hand sanitiser and gel

Hand sanitiser is perfect for maintaining personal hygiene when you can’t get access to soap and clean water.

The convenience of pocket-sized bottles means they’re ideal for use while on the go. They also fit neatly into any first aid kit.

In the event of an accident, be it in the home or outside, the use of hand sanitiser and gel both before and after the treatment of wounds can safeguard the injured and those treating them from infection.

Disinfectant

Harmful bacteria can exist on hard surfaces for hours, sometimes days. Eliminate germs, microorganisms, and viruses effectively by using multipurpose disinfectant spray. This spray serves particularly well in the event of body fluid spills.

Using alcohol wipes and disinfectant wipes is also a quick and effective way to neutralise germs on surfaces.

If someone in your house is ill, utilising disinfectant items is a good way to keep on top of ensuring good sanitary levels. They are then easy to dispose of once you have done your cleaning.

Disposable gloves

There is a variety of disposable glove types out there that utilise different materials for specific environments. Check our guide for further details on these here.

Whether you are cleaning surfaces or administering first aid, gloves will protect the skin from the transmission of harmful bacteria and chemicals.

Face masks

Face masks are not typically used by the general public except during exceptional circumstances, such as a pandemic.

These disposable masks are worn to help prevent the spread of airborne bacteria. The fabric of the mask blocks liquid droplets which may carry germs. One-use masks are usually effective for a number of hours.
