It can sometimes be confusing as to what first aid kit you are actually required to have — do you need a BSi 8599-1 compliant kit, a HSE Standard 10 Person kit or something completely different. The answer is actually that there is no definitive list of contents that you require, what you must do is carry out a risk assessment to attain the risk and then provide adequate first aid provision based on this assessment. The guidance for carrying out a risk assessment as set out by the Health & Safety Executive "First Aid at Work Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981" are contained within document L74 3rd Edition Published 2013 published on the HSE Official web site. In summary this stipulates that an employer has a legal duty to make arrangements and to ensure that their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or fall ill at work. The injury or illness does not have to have occurred at work, what is important is that they receive immediate and appropriate attention for the respective condition. This could involve calling an ambulance or seeking further medical advice should the condition deteriorate. Under Regulation 3 within the aforementioned L74 3rd Edition, it states that it is the duty of care of an employer to make adequate provision for first aid and an employer should provide, or ensure that there are provided, such equipment and facilities as are adequate and appropriate in the circumstances for enabling first aid to be administered to an employee if they are injured or become ill. In addition to providing adequate provisions in terms of first aid consumables and equipment an employer should also provide, or ensure it is provided, such number of suitable persons who can give adequate and appropriate first aid in the appropriate conditions. In many peoples eyes the content from the 10,20 and 50 person kit have become outdated and the 8599:1 2011 Standard replaces this recommended content and provides a more comprehensive content to cater for the low and medium risk environment of toady's workplace. The BS 8599:1 2011 standard sets the minimum level that first aid kits should contain to conform to the standard and it is written to advise the manufacturers of kits and anyone who assembles them as to the specific minimum standard of the individual items and quantities to enable the kit to then be compliant to the standard. These kits can be complimented by other items that have been identified during a risk assessment if necessary. The BS 8599:1 2011 standard also gives recommendations on the amount and size of the first aid kit necessary for different workplace environments and this is based on risk and the number of employees within the workplace, as below:Low Risk Environment This is typically classed as shops, offices, libraries and depending on the number of employees the following kits are recommended:Fewer than 25 employers then a BSi Compliant Small First Aid Kit Between 25-50 employees then a BSi Compliant Medium First Aid Kit More then 50 employees then 1 BSi Compliant Large First Aid Kit per 100 employees is recommended High Risk Environment This would be typically classed as most construction sites, light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments, chemical manufacture etc. The following kits are recommended under the standard: Fewer than 5 employees then a BSi Compliant Small First Aid Kit Between 5-25 employees then a BSi Compliant Medium First Aid Kit More than 25 employees then 1 BSi Compliant Large First Aid Kit per 25 employees.
