How the current issues in the Red Sea may affect our business

The recent escalation of the Houthis attacks on container ships in the Red Sea has seen almost all hauliers re-route shipments around The Cape of Good Hope South Africa, increasing the average freight time by around 11-14 days for containers from China.

We would like to reassure you that the stock holding we have at First Aid Warehouse and the planning we have been carrying out since the Red Sea crisis started mean that you should see no impact on stock availability. Indeed, current super core and core stock levels sit at 100% and 98% respectively, so we believe we have everything in place to maintain this service level to our customers.

Coupled with the additional timescales we are unfortunately seeing inflated container charges, with the average container charge now $5500 - $6000, up from $2000 before the attacks began.

Whilst we have to date absorbed these charges, we are continually monitoring the projections for the freight post Chinese New Year and if we continue to see these high charges, we will have to review how we share these with our customer base.

It is hoped that we will see a decline in costs, but we felt it pertinent to keep customers updated with the current situation.

WEEE Regulation

The WEEE Regulations are UK and European law. The broad aim of the regulations is to address the environmental impacts of electrical and electronic equipment when it reaches the end of its life.

Electrical and Electronic Equipment that was made after 13th August 2005 should display this symbol on the packaging or product. This symbol aims to encourage the householder to discard of their WEEE separately from other household waste.

The amount of electrical waste we throw away is increasing by around 5% each year, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the UK.

Each year in the UK we go throw away over 1.2 million tons of electrical and electronic waste. That is the equivalent of 150 thousand double decker buses!

Over 75% of waste electrical goods end up in landfill, where lead and other toxins contained in the electrical goods can cause soil and water contamination.

As a distributor we are committed to reducing the amount of WEEE that goes in to land fill. We are doing our bit for the environment by offering free in-store take back on a like-for-like basis when you purchase a new machine from us.

You can return your WEEE to us at our premises 3 Chesford Grange, Woolston, Warrington, WA1 4RQ, within 28 days of your purchase.
